Hi! I’m here today to share a few things with you about the big difference between high school and going to IUPUI in college. Now there are some big differences and maybe you thought about it and you said, eh, I got this. I mean you have been successful. But the biggest difference about high school and college is me and all the other faculty here at IUPUI. I suggest you think a little bit about your high school. Your parents were there, your teachers were great, you had parent teacher conference night. That does not exist in college. We are the conference night for four consecutive years. Think of us as a GPS. First mile, second mile, third mile, fourth mile, and we can guide you through those GPS markers every single year. Let’s start with the first mile and that is your freshman year. We’re here to help you with what to do in the classroom, reading the syllabus, how to take course notes, and that sort of thing. This is a little different than when you are actually in class and a lot of it is on you to come to us. That’s the biggest difference! We can help you on what to do your freshman year in order to get to a great start but you got to come to see us. We have offices and office hours. And don’t wait till the last minute, two weeks before the end of the semester. Mile two! You’ve been successful and it’s sophomore year. How can faculty help you? Well faculty can now work with you on how to be successful with what you’ve learned your first year as a freshman and as you move forward. Maybe you have some challenges you’re facing, maybe you’re not quite sure what your major is, maybe you’re not sure what your career path is but faculty have a lot of experience in that area. So you really need to check out your faculty, go to their office, talk with them, and seek their help. Mile three. This is the nitty gritty mile. Your junior year. For most of you this is the year where you decided on your major and now faculty can help you with the job search. They can practice with you on interviewing, they can help review your resume, and most importantly, they can serve as a recommendation not only for a job but perhaps for graduate school. Mile Four. Senior year. You’re ready to get out of here, right? But guess what? Faculty are not ready to let you go in one big way. We can be with you after graduation. We can help you in so many ways. Come back to see us. We can help you as perhaps you move to another career, or another job, or you need further recommendations. Perhaps now is the time you want to go to law school and get that Ph.D. Faculty can help you and give you valuable advice in that regard.
