Q&A | Discover the Disney Hospitality Leadership Program

February 15, 2020

Hi, my name is Serene, and I’m on the
Disney Hospitality Leadership Program. So the Disney Hospitality Leadership
Program is a professional internship here at the Walt Disney World Resort for
anyone who’s looking to gain insight as to what it’s like to be a leader. It’s
kind of like the Disney College Program, but for managers. The requirements for
the Disney Hospitality Leadership Program are that you have one year of
leadership experience either within or outside of the Walt Disney Company. You
don’t have to be a hospitality major to apply. I’m actually an environmental
science major! It’s open for anyone, just because there’s so many different areas
you can actually apply for. My program is one year long. I started June, and I
finish June of this year. There’s so many different areas and lines of business you can apply for. There’s food and beverage, merchandise,
recreation, front desk housekeeping, attractions and so many
more! No, you don’t have to do a college program before applying. I did do
a college program in Epcot Future World merchandise. I feel like my college
program helped me get this internship because it helped me understand what was expected of me as a cast member and what I could expect from my cast members as a leader. So, no, you don’t have to do the program, but I do feel like Disney
College Program alumni would be very interested in this role, because it does
help you gain more insight from the company. A typical day for me- I usually
come into work, do about 20 to 30 minutes of office work, checking emails and making sure that all my cast members are where they need to be. Once I’m finished with
that, I usually head out on the floor. I circle around to all the different shops
and make sure that all my cast members are okay and that they’re aware of what new updates we have in the location or within Disney in general. And after that, I usually go
around on the floor, talk to all the guests, make sure they’re all happy, and just
make sure that the operation is running as smoothly as possible. Yes I am considered a leader in my area-
not just an intern. Leading cast members is a very interesting experience, because not only are you leading cast members from such a
different variety of backgrounds, but you have to adjust to everyone’s different
learning styles as well, leading that many cast members at once. You’re not
only focusing on the guests having a great experience, but your cast
also has a great experience. The biggest thing I’ve learned so far is
that it is always okay to ask for help whenever you need it.
Typically, no two days of work are ever the same, and I’m still getting into
situations that I’ve never experienced before, so just being able to lean on my
peers for help in those situations and understanding that it is okay to need help
sometimes. Everyone around you is here to help you. This program helps your career just because there are so many different things that you learn as a Disney leader. You’re learning time management skills, as well as leading
multiple cast members- and just knowing the operation in general, as well as how
to handle a multitude of situations. My favorite part of my program is being
able to lead all of my cast members. When I first started, I was very anxious that
I wouldn’t be able to relate to them very much, but throughout my program I’ve seen that my cast members have no problem approaching me if they have
issues within work or outside of work. Just being able to be that shoulder
that my cast members need at times is definitely the most rewarding part. Thank you for sending me your questions! Have a magical day!
