Jordan Alexander on learning to express herself through pop music | Inspired | Xtra

February 25, 2020

You’ll hear a song and maybe the artist
is singing about a man or something – if you relate to that feeling and that
resonates with you, you understand that feeling and that’s the thing that
ties us together in a really whole way. I’m Jordan Alexander. I am a singer/songwriter and actor and I live in Toronto. Making music was very much out of
necessity. It was definitely something fun but I felt – I was like,
I don’t know how to express myself and this just feels like pain and so I would
write down words and think of melodies and things like that, so
definitely it’s gonna be a lot based in feelings usually regarding interaction, like maybe intimate interaction and then sometimes my
feelings like interacting with our society and life on a whole – I have
to do that to process the things that I feel or complicated emotions. I write in like a very hooky
kind of way and I feel like that lends itself to pop
music and I also really like the production of pop music, so I feel like
that’s why I kind of tend to go in that direction but I’m a songwriter so I
could probably write a country song or, I don’t know, other genres, but I think more naturally I tend to express myself in like a pop
genre. You know, we’re kind of being given the
space to tell more than one story, which I think is very important for
minority groups to be able to tell more than one story that everyone else can
easily digest. We’re complex human beings. We’re all very
different. It feels like there’s a lot more space to just exist and even in the acting scene as well, I think I think that it’s like a whole movement in
that we’re kind of getting past – “Oh my God you’re gay?” or whatever. It’s like, okay, and now we can talk about something else.
